Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) Concerning Breast Augmentation

Overfilling and Manufacturer's Warranties

Q: Does overfilling an implant past the manufacturer's recommended volume void the warranty?

A: Yes, technically. The manufacturer may still guarantee the implant if you have a leak or deflation, but you won't know until you have one. Request the manufacturer's product literature, warranty information, and a product insert booklet for the type of implant that you are choosing and read it very carefully. Also ask for a copy of the product insert from the box that includes instructions to your surgeon for proper use of the implant. Your surgeon should be happy to provide these for you, or call McGhan or Mentor directly.

Overfilling a breast implant past the manufacturer's recommended range definitely voids the manufacturer's warranty! The bottom line is, you won't know until you have a problem! If a surgeon tells you that it does not void the warranty, ask the surgeon to give you a written guarantee that the surgeon will pay the costs of replacing your implant if the manufacturer does not!

The Catch 22 only exists for ROUND implants. If you don't fill past manufacturer's recommendations with saline implants, the risk of visible underfill rippling is quite high (with round implants from all current U.S. manufacturers). If you overfill, you void the warranty! Neither is ideal.

When we designed the McGhan Style 468 saline anatomic implants, I insisted that the fill volumes be defined HIGHER-so that AT manufacturer's recommended fill volumes, the implant shell won't ripple or collapse in the upright position (how you usually look at your breasts).

With McGhan anatomic implants (Style 468 anatomics), it is NEVER necessary to fill above the manufacturer's recommended range, AND YOU KEEP YOUR WARRANTY!
