Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) Concerning Breast Augmentation

What Produces Projection?

Q: I want a lot more projection. What produces projection?

A: Projection is created by a combination of factors: 1) the amount and consistency of your breast tissue before augmentation, 2) the size (cc's) of the implant placed, and 3) the shape or design of the implant placedh, and 4) your skin characteristics (stretchiness). Anatomically shaped implants always create more projection for a given base width of the implant compared to round implants. With McGhan Style 468 anatomic implants, each increasing increment of size only increases the base width of the implant 0.5cm--barely visible to even the experienced eye. But as the base width of any implant increases, the size of the implant does not increase in direct proportion. As base width reaches a certain point, for each additional increment of base width, the volume of the implant increases more. Predicting projection is extremely complex--and depends on how thoroughly and precisely a surgeon can assess your tissues--a topic you don't hear much about! A lot depends on whether you are selecting a round or an anatomic implant. With McGhan Style 468 anatomic implants, the fill volumes are set to a very narrow range, and there is no need to overfill past the recommended range to prevent underfill rippling.
