Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) Concerning Breast Augmentation

What is the best incision approach?

Q: What is the best incision approach?

A: One of the most difficult things about considering your options is to understand that:

1) No option or set of options is best for every patient

2) A surgeon can't or won't offer you options if the surgeon is not comfortable with that particular approach or has little experience with an incision location, pocket location, etc.

3) No option or set of option is perfect--every single one comes with a set of tradeoffs. It's essential that you understand the tradeoffs of each option or set of options to make a good decision.

4) No incision approach is difficult if the surgeon has considerable experience with it. If the surgeon does not have experience, it's definitely "trickier".

5) One of the most important, yet ignored issues (you almost never hear discussed), is your tissues. Your tissues are differrent than other women. What's best for you depends on your wishes (what you want), your tissues (what your body will allow you to have), and the experience and expertise of your surgeon.

The best incision approach is the one you want, provided the surgeon has experience with that approach and feels that your specific breast type can be augmented optimally through the incision you select.

The axillary and umbilical approaches are NOT best for 1) extremely saggy breasts, and 2) constricted lower pole breasts (breasts are pointy, nipples often point downward, and the skin in the lower half of the breast is very tight).

Virtually any type of breast can be augmented through either the inframammary or periareolar approaches.

The incision location is an issue that most patients worry about before their surgery, but once they have a beautiful breast, it becomes a non-issue because no one pays attention to the incision scar.
