Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) Concerning Breast Augmentation
Facts About Pictures
Q: What should I look for when I look at a surgeon's "before and after" "brag book?"
A: Most surgeons will show only their best results. If all the results look too good, they probably don't represent an average result. The beauty of the result depends a lot on what the patient brought the surgeon to work with, as well as the skills of the surgeon! Any picture is almost worthless unless you look almost exactly like the woman pictured BEFORE she had her augmentation. If not, you definitely won't look like her afterwards. A picture can't tell you much about your tissues and how they'll interact with your implant. It usually won't be like the woman in the picture. Every picture you see is a selected result! Be sure that you see MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREASTS! Find one that looks as similar to you as possible to make any valid judgements. No one-not even the most expert plastic surgeon-can accurately estimate implant size from looking at a picture. I know, because I ask them to do it frequently in courses I teach, and they're never able to be very accurate. Not even the most expert plastic surgeon can reliably tell from a picture whether an implant is over or under muscle unless the patient is contracting her pectoralis muscle by pushing her hands together. You can't reliably tell from a picture whether an implant is a round or an anatomic. I can make a result look anatomic with a round implant-problem is, if the breast looks anatomic, the upper portion of the round implant is collapsed, the shell is folded, and the implant is likely to fail sooner! For pictures to be meaningful, you need to look at them with someone who honestly shows you the positives and negatives of each result. There is no such thing as a perfect result--I can always show you the less than perfect aspects of any result.
