Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) Concerning Breast Augmentation
Are Drains Necessary?
Q: Why do some surgeons use drains after augmentations and other's don't? Are they necessary?
A: Whether drains are necessary following augmentation depends on how the operation is done. If blunt dissection techniques (some surgeons use the techniques because they think they are faster and easier) are used to create the implant pocket, these techniques cause more tissue trauma and bleeding compared to other techniques. Drains are often necessary to remove fluid produced by the tissues in response to the tissue trauma of dissection when blunt dissection is used. Using different techniques that we believe are far superior to blunt
dissection, we find that drains are totally unnecessary in first time augmentation
operations! In over 10 years, we've never placed a drain in a first time
augmentation. They're still sometimes necessary in reoperations.
